Existing Project 4: The Robotic Chair

February 27, 2007

The robotic chair is another piece of work by Raffaello D’Andrea. The robotic chair begins by breaking itself apart onto the floor. This chair then begins to reassemble itself. This work is really interesting and grabs the attention of the audience. The main part of the chair is run by some sort of motor which moves around and connected the other pieces to it. Its interesting how Raffaello does such interesting things with everyday objects. Here you don’t see what any computers are doing just the motor moving. While this project doesn’t involve the user overly interacting with the environment it does show a different way that a project can be presented.

Existing Project 3: The Table

February 27, 2007

This piece of interactive art is done by Raffaello D’Andrea. The table was just a single table placed within a room. When visitors walked through the room the table would interact with them by moving towards them and also backing away from visitors. What i found the most interesting about this work was the people reactions to it. This really shows invisible computing very well as you see nothing but the table and wheels. In an artistic view of the project it was quite good just a single table no one had any idea what to expect.

Existing Project 2: Easel

February 27, 2007

Easel:

This interactive work uses video to capture an image of the user. The user can then paint over the appearance of the piece using a paint brush which is made using technology such as infrared and fiber optic bristles the output of this is that what the user pains using the brush appears on the projected image. This allows the users to become artists themselves. This very much relies on the user interaction with the piece using the brush the fact that it is being run by a computer is almost completely forgotten.

Existing Project 1: Animated gesture

February 27, 2007

Animated Gestures:

This piece of work captures the shape of the viewer with the use of an overhead camera. The movements are then translated into a series of marks, erasures or animated actions onto the projected compositions. The palette of marks represents different types of drawing media such as thick oil pastel and watercolor spots to name a few. These are reflective of the artist’s style. This project relates to the studio theme by having the computer in the background the user just interacts with the projection and influences the picture by the way they are moving. .

Week 1 Initial Research

February 27, 2007

Research:

Ubiquitous Computing refers to the trend that we as humans interact no longer with one computer at a time, but rather with a dynamic set of small networked computers, often invisible and embodied in everyday objects in the environment.

Ubiquitous computing names the third wave in computing, just now beginning. First were mainframes, each shared by lots of people. Now we are in the personal computing era, person and machine staring uneasily at each other across the desktop. Next comes ubiquitous computing, or the age of calm technology, when technology recedes into the background of our lives. Alan Kay of Apple calls this “Third Paradigm” computing.

Initial thoughts:

My initial thoughts were that having a project to educate children would be interesting as you need to think in a different frame of mind. But I am still interested in what other works could be created especially if I can work on a project into studio 6.

Interesting sites:

The following project based on Roald Dahl’s characters and stories. Based on a hands on approach. Gives a view into some of the design process involved as well. This site also involves making the children think differently within a space.
